Beaches of Karachi: Ordinary yet an extraordinary consideration required

Karachi is a metropolitan city with dynamic people, but trouble is seemed when its marked beauty becomes a deadly serene. Many people lost their precious lives just because security warnings were taken lightly. We can’t blame or point an individual for these misfortune events as most of the time people themselves lose their conscious in a rhythm of excitement. The atmosphere and climate of Karachi is kind of abrupt and serendipitous since the last few years, you can never expect when a scorching heat wave can turn into a gusty heavy rainfall. This is what compells people to get through the adaption process. No doubt that the beautiful beaches attract tourists as well as locals who spend their leisure time here, but sometimes this fun tends to turn into tragedy. Drowning incidents in Karachi, especially during July and August are not uncommon but authorities always put responsibility on picnickers for ignoring warnings against swimming in rough seas instead of taking proper measu...

Paratha takes over a new leaf

According to a legend once Emperor Jahangir called upon his cook Adil hafiz Usman, and asked him to come up with a new kind of paratha, since he got bored of eating the same simple paratha with mince (qeema) every day. One the ninth day the cook came up with a new innovation in Paratha, Zabir Fala or Anda roti, which was later known to be famously as Mughlai Paratha. Jahangir was so delighted with his cook that he gifted him 1001 gold coins and a land in west Bengal. So the forefather of modern paratha came into being. Just imagine 1001 gold coins for a simple paratha in the 16th century, what if he lives for today seeing such variety of innovative parathas especially here at Karachi. This unleavened flatbread originated in the Northern Indian Subcontinent. It is a very popular meal in Pakistani households. This dish has travelled to many parts of the world, including USA, Europe, Canada, Singapore and Malaysia. In Trinidad and Tobago, it differs from the South Asian version w...

Because I own Karachi

Before travelling to  Turkey  last month, I was told about Turkish hospitality and I got to witness their wa rmth towards desi tourists for myself. But for a total stranger to ask me what Karachi means to me, was something entirely new – I’ve never ever been asked this and hence I got to thinking. I spent my earlier days abroad and settled in Kara chi when I was about 11-years-old. My parents were fond of travelling, and as a family we could be described as frequent flyers. Most of the plac es I have ever visited or previously called home are generally all developed countries. They can boast about being the world’s most liveable places and rightly so, because to date, they have the best of everything to offer people from all walks of life. Conversely, Karachi has everything going against it  –  lack of infrastructure, water problems, power outages,  security issues ,  ethnic strifes , kidnapping,  target killings  and a populatio...

While Lahore has experienced what it feels like to watch international cricket at home, the residents of Karachi remain deprived of this joy. The wait for Karachi maybe over in 2018 as the Pakistan Cricket Board has the intentions to hold the final of the third instalment of PSL at the National Stadium. However, will the National Stadium be able to hold the final in March is a big question. Encounter: Bypassing The Third Pillar

Who would have thought that pictures of a model-like guy will be used to show an innocent who was murdered in one of Karachi’s encounter killings. While common sense treats him far from being involved in terrorist activities, the statements of friends and family members, and the overall image portrayed through social media depicts him as a broadminded gentleman. The term encounter is used when policemen or other law enforcement officials retaliate in self-defence whenever they are attacked by suspected gangsters or terrorists. Pakistan’s constitution itself requires police to produce suspects before law, and accountability of those who carry out unlawful killings. Muhammad Ali Nekokara, a former police officer, writes that encounter deaths are often justified by moral righteousness and passive obedience to authority. Nekokara noted that rogue elements within the police department benefit from these killings in terms of power and authority. This gives rise to the so-call...

A mother’s confession

I am scared! As a mother, the primary emotion I am feeling these days is fear. Scared for my children’s safety in this country, which is our home and where we are considered to be first-rate citizens. I feel scared when I receive messages regarding security threat right in the sector where my elder two children’s school is. I feel that fear as I drop them at the school gate and wait on egg shells till they come back, all the time while I try to push away the faces of so many innocent children whose lives were taken before their time by acts of terrorism. I feel the same emotion of anxiety and trepidation when I pick my 5 years old from her school. Her beautiful innocent face and the total lack of any worry that shows on her face hits me like a punch in the gut as the reality of being her protector hits me. I try to read the expression on the school guards faces. Are they showing extra interest in my child? Is the young one with the beard a little suspicious looking or am I over re...

The Karachi Voter Is Ready To Look Beyond Ethnic Identities

With the arrival of new political entity in form of the Mustafa Kamal led Pak Sarzameen Party in the electoral landscape of Karachi, complimented by improved law and order, it is safe to predict that the next general polls will give more choice to the residents of the metropolis on the ballot paper in a safe law and order situation. But will the Karachittes cash on the opportunity? We don’t know. Should they? Certainly. This is a fact, not an analysis that the city despite being financial hub of the country has failed to grow as per its potential. It may have achieved an artificial peace and stability for a brief time period, but whenever strict security presence is taken off from the streets, the metropolis begins to plunge back in the senseless cruel string of violence. Till the moment development of the city all across the board is not prioritized, and the basic necessity woes are not addressed, no matter how many security operations are conducted, peace in Karachi will remain...

Old Karachi, As they Say “Old is Gold”

Karachi is one hell of a crazy, complex, multi webbed, multi cultural, and a tremendously huge mega city! While we spend each day here faster than the blink of an eye, we hardly get time to ponder over the old Karachi. The current, messy and not so neat looking Karachi was once amongst the cleanest cities of the world. Ouch! that hurts, I know.  And the more I learn about old Karachi, the more I am mesmerized,  by the journey people have taken here,  through  some of the most devastating  turmoils . When you go through old Karachi pictures online or in print, you just feel something. A feeling that gives you goosebumps due to extreme awe and fear. Awe because it’s hard to believe that the roads that now have nothing more than huge loads of garbage dumped on the sides were as clean as the sidewalk in a park and fear because it’s agonizing to witness that people or forces can be so brutal that they can be so destructive towards their own city....

Karachi’s billion rupee loss

The Sindh’s inquiries and anti-corruption establishment has unearthed a mega corruption scandal worth Rs 5 billion in the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) and the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA), which were collected from the people of the city since 2008. Inside sources told  Pakistan Today  that the Sindh Building Control Authority had collected more than Rs 5 billion from Karachiites under the claims of Betterment Charges on the construction of high-rise/multi-storied buildings. According to sources, the SBCA made amendments in the Karachi Building and Town Planning Regulations, 2002 through which the covered area of plot is governed by floor area ratio (FAR) and not number of floors. “The load over the existing infrastructure has increased and SBCA has also recovered Rs 50 per sq ft from the owners/builders of plots which lie outside the boundary limit of KDA schemes”, sources added. Interestingly, the sources disclosed that officials of the F...

The delegation met with the DG Rangers and informed him about their security concerns after a hand grenade attack in Kahradar cloth market on January 18 and Suspicious Extortion Calls  Matters discussed in the meeting included the security situation and measures taken by Rangers to provide security. DG Rangers assured the traders that the paramilitary force would continue their efforts against criminals and extortionists. He said extortion is a menace and it will not be allowed to take roots in Karachi again. He also said that the Rangers have already been patrolling in the city markets for the protection of traders. The delegation appreciated the Rangers’ efforts and role for peace in the city.
WHAT can one realistically expect for Pak-India relations in 2018? A repeat of a barren 2017? Or a teasing show of progress through predictably wasteful talks? It is some comfort that the countries’ national security advisers met in Bangkok on Dec 27. One can only hope that Ajit Doval and retired Lt Gen Nasser Khan Janjua discussed how to restore the long-interrupted dialogue. On Nov 10, a delegation led by the DG Rangers Sindh and DG Border Security Force met on the Wagah-Attari border. That this ‘bi-annual meeting’ had not been held for 18 months prior speaks a lot for the state of relations. It would be rash to read too much into both meetings. In December, India’s minister for external affairs firmly ruled out even reviving cricket matches between the two countries. Around the same time, India decided to tap fully its share of the Indus River’s waters, under the Indus Waters Treaty, 1960 — reportedly “to strike back at Pakistan”. Several false notions underlie India’s presen...
